The Devil Tarot Card Meaning

The Devil tarot card from the 1909 Rider-Waite-Smith deck
Rider–Waite–Smith, 1909 (public domain)

Group: Major Arcana · Keywords: temptation, attachment, desire

The Devil (shown in some decks as "Chains") is attachment and temptation: being bound by desires, habits or greed.

General meaning

Strong passions, impatience, stubbornness and a pull towards indulgence such as drinking or gambling. The card warns against shortcuts to wealth and bad influences.

Work and money

Beware of money made unfairly. Success, if it comes, may rely on charm and cunning rather than doing what is right. Think every decision through.

Love

Intense, possessive, jealous passion that may be based more on desire than real love. Be careful not to be deceived.

Advice

Recognise what is holding you back. The chains are often looser than they look.
