Each Chinese year also has an element (Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal or Water), set by the last digit of the year: 0–1 Metal, 2–3 Water, 4–5 Wood, 6–7 Fire, 8–9 Earth. Together they form a 60-year cycle.
In Thailand the same twelve animals are used, with two local differences: the Dragon year is often pictured as a great snake or naga, and some Thai calendars change the animal at Thai New Year (Songkran) or on the first day of the lunar fifth month rather than at Chinese New Year. Our Thai-language page follows the Thai tradition.
